Sharon Gaskin 

My name is Sharon Gaskin and I’m the Founder of The Trainers Training Company, the premier resource to help freelance trainers create successful and profitable training businesses.

Prior to founding The Trainers Training Company I ran my own training business for 10 years and know exactly what it’s like to experience the roller coaster life as a freelance trainer. Apart from the obvious challenge of attracting and securing work, I found personally that one of the biggest problems I faced was how to motivate myself when I was having a bad day or feeling uncertain about a decision.

When you are freelance you are on your own. Yes, there are plenty of networking events you can go to but generally they are full of people from a variety of businesses, they can sometimes be intimidating and you may also sometimes feel an obligation to say everything is wonderful when it’s not!

One of my passions is bringing freelance trainers together to learn, share and connect. Creating a sense of community is a key mission of The Trainers Training Company.

·       As a freelancer, how do you add value to your clients?

It’s pretty much a given that most of us will pride ourselves on how we thrive in the training room, how well we can engage our learners and run fantastic learning sessions. As freelancers however, often we find that the training room or venue is our only interaction with the people we are working with. The first time you have an impact is when they walk in. Then they leave, all fired up to implement their plans to transfer their learning while we say goodbye and head off home.

 

Being great in the training room is pretty much essential. The challenge is that there are actually quite a lot of us that are good in the training room. Extending that impact we have beyond the training room, both before we arrive and long after we leave can be a very compelling USP to help you stand out to your clients. It is also a very compelling reason for clients to use you again and again as you build stronger more extended relationships with your learners. Many of the ideas, activities and methods you can use to do this are easy, don’t take much time and often cost nothing or very little to do.

 

This is going to be a fully interactive session , working in groups to explore this space before and after your training events: we’ll tap in to the collective creativity in this amazing community to build a toolkit of ideas and activities that we can all use to extend our value to our clients and learners.
